Because it discards the sign of the swing, this absolute-jitter figure from the reflector back to the probe gives a technician a single severity number to alarm on without watching the positive and negative jitter counters separately. For example, if this minimum absolute jitter from the reflector back to the probe holds steady at its usual floor while spikes show up elsewhere in the same live bin, the technician watching the dashboard right now can conclude the path itself is healthy and the spikes are transient.
