Because it discards the sign of the swing, this absolute-jitter figure from the probe to the reflector gives a technician a single severity number to alarm on without watching the positive and negative jitter counters separately. For example, pulling this minimum absolute jitter from the probe to the reflector out of an archived bin from the night of a customer complaint lets the technician confirm the best case never crossed a danger threshold, steering the after-the-fact investigation toward an intermittent cause.
