Description: IBM enterprise MIB for monitoring client workstation hardware, software inventory, and system information on IBM-managed desktop systems

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CLIENT-MIB?

CLIENT-MIB is an IBM enterprise MIB used to inventory and monitor client workstations/desktops managed under IBM's systems-management framework. It exposes a system table describing each managed client's name, description, IP address, SNA/APPN network identity, and community string, giving administrators a per-device inventory record. Critically for hardware/software status monitoring, it reports clntMemorySize (installed memory), clntSystemUpTime (how long the workstation has run since last reboot), and clntSystemStatus (overall operational state), plus a flag (clntSupportMibII) indicating whether the client also implements standard MIB-II. It has an explicit dependency on RFC 1213 MIB-II, since clntSupportMibII exists to signal interoperability with that standard interface/system MIB. This MIB is deployed in enterprise IT environments running IBM systems-management agents on desktop or workstation fleets, where a central console polls many clients for inventory and uptime/availability reporting. Engineers can download the CLIENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CLIENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM-managed client workstations/desktops

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk clntSystemTable/clntSystemEntry indexed by clntSystemIndex to enumerate every managed client, reading clntSysName and clntSysDescr for identification and clntIpAddress for reachability. Polling clntSystemUpTime across the fleet reveals unexpected reboots (a sudden reset to zero), while clntMemorySize helps flag systems below a minimum spec. clntSystemStatus can be checked to catch a client transitioning to a non-operational state, and clntCommunity/clntAppnCpNetId support cross-referencing with SNA network management tools.

What Can Be Monitored

  • client system uptime
  • installed memory size
  • system operational status
  • system name and description
  • IP address
  • MIB-II support flag
