Category: Vendor: RADLAN/Cisco SB

Description: Monitors TCP/UDP socket connections and resource usage on Cisco Small Business switch platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCOSB-SOCKET-MIB?

CISCOSB-SOCKET-MIB is a Cisco Small Business private MIB exposing the device's own internal TCP/UDP socket table, essentially a management-plane view of open network connections and their state on the switch itself. It provides a table of sockets with type (TCP/UDP), current state, blocking mode, and how long each socket has been open. Its monitoring value is software/process-level health—detecting resource leaks (e.g. sockets stuck in a non-closing state), abnormal connection counts, or long-lived sockets that may indicate a hung management process on the device. It has no dependency on external standard MIBs, being a lightweight vendor-specific diagnostic table. It is used on Cisco Small Business switches primarily for low-level troubleshooting of the device's own management/control-plane software, an area where CISCOSB-SOCKET-MIB SNMP monitoring helps administrators spot socket leaks before they degrade the switch's management responsiveness.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-SOCKET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Small Business switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator troubleshooting sluggish web-management response would poll rlSocketTable/rlSocketEntry and check rlSocketState for entries stuck in an unusual state, and rlSocketUpTime to spot sockets that have remained open far longer than expected. A growing rlSocketTable with many entries in the same rlSocketType and non-closing rlSocketState would indicate a socket leak in the device's management software consuming system resources.

What Can Be Monitored

  • open TCP/UDP socket count
  • socket type (TCP/UDP)
  • socket state
  • socket blocking mode
  • socket up-time
