Category: Vendor: RADLAN/Cisco SB

Description: Extends RMON statistics collection with Marvell-specific monitoring and event capabilities.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RADLAN-RMON?

RADLAN-RMON is a private Radlan/Marvell MIB module extending standard RMON (Remote Network Monitoring) statistics collection with vendor-specific history control and event capabilities. It exposes objects for configuring historical data collection buckets, quotas, and global bucket limits beyond what the standard RMON MIB provides. Rather than reporting hardware faults directly, it governs and reports on the switch's traffic statistics history-gathering subsystem, letting an administrator confirm that historical performance counters (packet/octet/error history per interface) are actively being collected and retained. It extends and depends on the standard RMON MIB (RFC 2819) history control group. It is typically deployed on Radlan/Marvell-based managed switches used for traffic trend analysis and capacity planning, and administrators can download the RADLAN-RMON file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADLAN-RMON. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Radlan/Marvell-based managed switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll rlHistoryControlTable entries indexed by rlHistoryControlIndex to check rlHistoryControlBucketsRequested versus rlHistoryControlBucketsGranted for a given rlHistoryControlDataSource (interface), confirming the switch has enough memory to honor the requested history depth. The rlRmonControlHistoryControlQuotaBucket and rlRmonControlHistoryControlMaxGlobalBuckets objects reveal whether the device is near its global RMON history capacity, which if exceeded would cause older or newly requested history collections to be truncated or denied.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RMON history buckets requested vs granted
  • history collection interval
  • global RMON bucket quota/capacity
  • history control owner and status per data source
