Last Updated: 2007-01-02

Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Vendor: RADLAN/Cisco SB

Description: Provides Switch Monitoring (SMON) extensions for traffic statistics and port monitoring on Cisco Small Business switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCOSB-SMON-MIB?

CISCOSB-SMON-MIB extends the standard Switch Monitoring (SMON) MIB with Cisco Small Business-specific objects for configuring port mirroring (port-copy) sessions used to capture and analyze traffic. It exposes configuration objects controlling whether port-copy sessions are enabled, the copy destination mode (monitor-only versus network), and whether VLAN tags are preserved on mirrored frames, alongside a version/capability indicator for the SMON feature set. As a diagnostic-configuration MIB, it's most relevant to software status monitoring in the sense of verifying that traffic-capture sessions are correctly enabled and configured before relying on them to troubleshoot a network problem. It is an extension of the IETF SMON MIB (RFC 2613) adapted for Cisco Small Business switch hardware. It is deployed on Cisco Small Business switches whenever an administrator needs to mirror traffic to a monitoring port for packet capture or analysis, and CISCOSB-SMON-MIB SNMP monitoring confirms the mirroring session is enabled and correctly configured before it's relied upon.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-SMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Small Business switches

Monitoring Examples

Before capturing traffic to diagnose a network issue, an administrator checks rlPortCopySessionsEnabled to confirm mirroring is globally enabled and rlPortCopyMode to see whether the destination port is set to monitor-only or network mode. The rlPortCopyVlanTaggingTable controls whether VLAN tags are preserved on copied frames, which matters if the packet-capture tool expects to see original VLAN tagging. rlPortCopyMibVersion and rlPortCopySupport confirm which SMON capabilities the switch model actually supports before the session is configured.

What Can Be Monitored

  • port mirroring (copy) session enabled state
  • copy destination mode (monitor-only/network)
  • VLAN tagging behavior on mirrored ports
  • supported SMON MIB version/capability
