Description: Manages file system operations including upload, download, and storage on Cisco Small Business devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCOSB-File?

CISCOSB-File is a private Cisco Small Business MIB (using the legacy "rl" object prefix) for managing files stored on a device's local flash/file system, such as configuration backups, firmware images, and logs. It exposes a file inventory table with name, size, permissions, and modification date/time, along with the overall flash storage size and an action table for triggering file operations. Its monitoring value covers both storage hardware and software state: rlFileFlashSize reveals flash storage capacity utilization, while rlFileSize and rlFileModificationDate/Time on entries such as firmware images or configuration backups let an admin confirm a scheduled backup or upgrade actually completed at the expected time and size rather than failing silently. It has no notable dependency on external standard MIBs, sitting instead within Cisco's private Small Business enterprise SMI tree. It is deployed on Cisco Small Business switches and routers, where SNMP-based file management substitutes for a full CLI or GUI session. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCOSB-File file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-File. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Small Business (SG/SF series) switches

Monitoring Examples

An admin walks rlFileTable/rlFileEntry (rlFileName, rlFileSize, rlFileModificationDate, rlFileModificationTime) to verify that a configuration or firmware file was written to flash at the expected time and size, catching a failed or truncated upload. Comparing the sum of rlFileSize across entries against rlFileFlashSize indicates how close the device is to running out of flash storage. rlFileActionTable together with rlFileRowStatus would be used to trigger a file operation, such as a firmware upload, and confirm its completion.

What Can Be Monitored

  • file name, size, and permissions
  • file modification date/time
  • flash storage capacity
  • file upload/download action status
