Category: Frame Relay, Vendor: Cisco Devices

Description: Manages Cisco WAN Frame Relay X.21 interface configuration for serial WAN connections on MGX.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-WAN-FR-X21-MIB?

The CISCO-WAN-FR-X21-MIB configures and monitors X.21/HSSI physical and logical WAN interfaces, including their alarm settings, on Cisco MGX WAN switch serial/Frame Relay modules. It exposes line configuration data such as enable state, line type, line rate, connector type, clock inversion, and loopback command/detection settings, alongside a dedicated alarm configuration group. Its monitoring emphasis is on physical WAN link and alarm status: whether a line is unexpectedly in loopback (and whether that was locally commanded or triggered by a received loopback code) and whether an alarm condition is active both point directly to physical-layer faults on the HSSI/X.21 circuit. It is part of the Cisco MGX WAN switch card family and works alongside standard serial-interface conventions for physical WAN link management. It is deployed on Cisco MGX ATM/Frame Relay WAN switches equipped with X.21/HSSI interface cards, typically after a CISCO-WAN-FR-X21-MIB download is loaded into the operator's MIB browser or NMS.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-WAN-FR-X21-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MGX WAN switches with X.21/HSSI interface modules

Monitoring Examples

An engineer checks x21CnfGrpTable/x21CnfGrpEntry for a given x21LineNum to verify x21LineEnable, x21LineRate, and x21LineType match the provisioned circuit. If a line is unexpectedly in loopback, x21LineLoopbackCommand and x21LineLoopbackCodeDetection reveal whether it was locally commanded or triggered by a received loopback code from the far end, while the alarm group objects would show an active alarm explaining a WAN circuit outage.

What Can Be Monitored

  • line enable/admin state
  • line rate and type
  • loopback command/detection state
  • connector type and clock inversion setting
  • physical line alarm status
