Description: MAC address pool allocation and assignment tracking for Cisco UCS fabric interconnects and server service profiles

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-MACPOOL-MIB?

CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-MACPOOL-MIB is part of Cisco's Unified Computing System (UCS) MIB family, modeling the MAC address pool management information used to assign MAC addresses to virtual network interfaces on UCS blade and rack servers via service profiles. It exposes a MAC address table detailing each address's distinguished name (Dn/Rn), assignment status, the owning service profile it's assigned to, and pool-level counts of globally assigned versus globally defined addresses, plus a corresponding block table for address ranges. Its monitoring role is chiefly a software/configuration one within the UCS management model: tracking cucsMacpoolAddrGlobalAssignedCnt against cucsMacpoolAddrGlobalDefinedCnt reveals whether a MAC pool is close to exhaustion, which would block new service profile deployments if not addressed. As a UCS-specific module it depends on Cisco's broader Unified Computing System management information model (the "cucs" object family), since MAC pool entries are meaningless without the service profile and fabric interconnect objects they relate to. It is deployed on Cisco UCS fabric interconnects managing pools of blade/rack servers in data center compute environments. Engineers can download the CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-MACPOOL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-MACPOOL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco UCS fabric interconnects
  • Cisco UCS blade/rack servers

Monitoring Examples

A UCS administrator provisioning new server service profiles would poll cucsMacpoolAddrGlobalAssignedCnt versus cucsMacpoolAddrGlobalDefinedCnt for a given pool to check remaining MAC address capacity before it blocks new profile creation. Walking cucsMacpoolAddrTable, they could inspect cucsMacpoolAddrAssigned and cucsMacpoolAddrAssignedToDn to see which specific service profile (by Dn) owns a given address, useful when troubleshooting a MAC conflict. The cucsMacpoolBlockTable would be checked to confirm which address ranges are defined for the pool feeding that assignment count.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC pool assigned vs. defined address counts
  • MAC address assignment status
  • service profile owning a given MAC address
  • MAC address block/range definitions
