What Is CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-MIB?

CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-MIB is the top-level SNMP management module for Cisco's Unified Computing System (UCS), the converged infrastructure platform that combines blade/rack servers, fabric interconnects, and virtualization networking under a single UCS Manager domain. It establishes the root object, ciscoUnifiedComputingMIBObjects, under which the broader UCS MIB family exposes the hierarchical tree of managed objects representing chassis, blades, service profiles, fabric extenders, and their operational and administrative settings. Through this and its companion UCS MIBs, an administrator can monitor hardware health (blade and chassis power, fan, and thermal status), server availability and uptime, firmware/software versions, and configuration state of service profiles. This module works in conjunction with the CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-TC-MIB for its textual conventions and depends on the broader UCS management information tree it anchors, forming the SNMP entry point that any team running a Cisco Unified Computing System UCS domain relies on to organize hardware telemetry. It is deployed in data centers running Cisco UCS blade or rack server infrastructure managed via UCS Manager or UCS Central.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

The root object ciscoUnifiedComputingMIBObjects anchors the entire UCS management tree, under which vendor-specific tables (not enumerated in this top module) expose per-chassis and per-blade status such as power state, thermal sensors, and fault conditions. An administrator polling under this subtree could detect a blade that has dropped out of service or a fabric interconnect reporting a fault. Because this particular module mainly defines the root and organizational structure, granular monitoring relies on subordinate UCS MIB tables layered beneath ciscoUnifiedComputingMIBObjects.

Cisco UCS Manager provides centralized management capabilities, creates a unified management domain, and serves as the central nervous system of the Cisco Unified Computing System. UCS configuration is comprised of operational and administrative settings. The data is organized hierarchically in a tree structure, starts from the top (root) and contains children and parent nodes. Each node in the tree is a managed object and each object in the UCS has a unique Distinguished Name (DN) that describes the object and its place in the tree. Every managed object is also identified through a CucsManagedObjectId of type integer. Managed objects are abstractions of real world resources, they represent the physical and logical components of the UCS, for example, switch, chassis, blades, and so on. Properties on the Managed Objects (MO) are characterized as configurations and operations. Configuration Policies are the majority of the policies in the system and are used to describe configurations of different components of the UCS. Policies determine how the system behaves under specific circumstances. Certain MOs are not created by users, but are automatically created by the UCS, power supply objects and fan objects are examples of automatically created MOs.
