Description: Manages UDLD (Unidirectional Link Detection Protocol) for detecting and disabling unidirectional Ethernet links.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-UDLDP-MIB?

CISCO-UDLDP-MIB is a Cisco vendor module for UDLD (UniDirectional Link Detection Protocol), a Layer 2 protocol that detects Ethernet links where traffic flows in only one direction -- a fault condition that standard link-state detection can miss -- and shuts the affected port down to prevent loops or blackholed traffic. It exposes global UDLD configuration (enable state, hello interval, mode, fast-hello variants) as well as per-interface operational data (enable state, operational status, aggressive mode, admin mode). Its monitoring value is squarely in detecting a specific hardware/link-layer fault: a unidirectional fiber or copper link caused by a bad transceiver, miswired fiber pair, or one-way cable fault, which UDLD surfaces via cudldpInterfaceOperStatus and related notifications rather than through simple link-up/down status. It complements standard interface (IF-MIB) and spanning-tree monitoring, since a UDLD-detected fault often explains an otherwise-unexplained loop or blackhole that STP alone wouldn't catch. It's deployed on Cisco switches, especially at fiber-optic aggregation points, where a one-way link failure could otherwise cause a silent network loop or traffic black hole. Engineers can download the CISCO-UDLDP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-UDLDP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switches (fiber-optic uplinks/aggregation)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check cudldpInterfaceTable/cudldpInterfaceEntry, keyed per interface, for cudldpInterfaceEnable and cudldpInterfaceOperStatus to confirm UDLD is active and the link is bidirectionally healthy. If cudldpInterfaceAggressiveMode is enabled and cudldpFastHelloLinkFailRptNotifEnable/cudldpFastHelloStatusChangeNotifEnable traps fire, that signals UDLD detected a one-way link (often from a bad transceiver or a fiber pair swapped/miswired) and likely err-disabled the port to prevent a bridging loop.

What Can Be Monitored

  • UDLD global enable state and hello interval
  • per-interface UDLD operational status
  • aggressive mode setting
  • link failure / status-change notifications
