Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capability statements for Cisco system-level management MIB across IOS and NX-OS platform releases.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SYSTEM-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-SYSTEM-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module published by Cisco Systems that documents which objects and groups of the CISCO-SYSTEM-MIB are actually implemented on specific IOS and NX-OS platform releases. Rather than exposing live data, it enumerates supported variation clauses so that an NMS or SMI compiler can determine feature support per software version. It is used indirectly in monitoring workflows to validate whether a given device release will return meaningful values for CISCO-SYSTEM-MIB objects such as boot time or system status before polling begins, rather than to report hardware/software health itself. It depends entirely on CISCO-SYSTEM-MIB, the module whose implementation it describes. Typical deployment context is MIB compiler/toolchain configuration and capability negotiation in NMS platforms managing mixed-version Cisco IOS/NX-OS estates, not runtime polling. Engineers can download the CISCO-SYSTEM-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SYSTEM-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS devices
  • Cisco NX-OS devices
  • vendor-neutral in role (a capabilities/conformance document, not tied to end-user monitoring)

Monitoring Examples

This module contains no runtime data objects (no scalars or tables) and its sample_objects list is empty, consistent with it being a pure AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance statement rather than a monitoring MIB. It cannot be polled for status; instead, tools that compile or validate MIB support (e.g., an SMI-aware NMS) reference it to confirm which CISCO-SYSTEM-MIB objects are present on a given IOS/NX-OS image. There is no realistic 'anomaly detection' scenario to describe here since it carries no operational data.
