Category: SNMP Framework, Textual Conventions and Registries, Vendor: Siemens
Description: Defines textual conventions and common data types for Siemens industrial automation SNMP MIB modules.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is AUTOMATION-TC?
AUTOMATION-TC is a Siemens Industry Sector module that defines shared textual conventions (custom data types) used across Siemens' family of industrial automation SNMP MIBs. It contains no managed objects, tables, or traps of its own -- it is purely a type-definition library that other Siemens automation MIBs import to ensure consistent representation of values like status codes, identifiers, or units across the product line. Because of this, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status by itself; its value lies entirely in standardizing how status/fault data is expressed in the Siemens MIBs that depend on it. Every Siemens industrial automation MIB using these conventions has an implicit dependency on this module for compilation and correct semantic interpretation. It is deployed wherever Siemens industrial automation SNMP agents (PLCs, industrial switches, automation controllers) are managed via SNMP. Engineers can download the AUTOMATION-TC file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AUTOMATION-TC. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral within the Siemens product line, not device-specific itself
- Siemens industrial automation devices (PLCs, controllers, industrial switches)
Monitoring Examples
This module defines only TEXTUAL CONVENTION types with no OBJECT-TYPE instances, so there is nothing to poll or graph directly from AUTOMATION-TC itself. Its conventions are instead referenced by other Siemens automation MIBs when defining their own status or measurement objects. Any monitoring scenario would actually be exercised through those dependent MIBs, not this one.
