Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management, Hardware and Environment, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capabilities for Cisco system extension features including chassis, memory, and boot information.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module documenting which objects and groups of CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-MIB -- covering system extension features such as chassis identification, memory pool statistics, and boot/configuration information -- are actually implemented by a given Cisco device's SNMP agent. Rather than exposing runtime data itself, it declares implementation variations, supported groups, and platform-specific limitations of the underlying system-extension MIB. It has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status; instead it enables management applications to determine ahead of time which chassis, memory, or boot-related monitoring objects a specific Cisco platform and IOS/IOS-XE version will actually return. It is entirely dependent on CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-MIB, the MIB whose supported feature set it exists to describe. It is used during NMS onboarding and MIB compliance validation for Cisco devices, ensuring monitoring templates only request objects the target platform's agent actually supports. Engineers can download the CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router
  • Cisco switch (IOS/IOS-XE platforms)

Monitoring Examples

This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module with no runtime data objects (no sample objects were provided), so there is no monitoring scenario to describe; it is consulted only by management tooling to determine which parts of CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-MIB (such as chassis or memory-pool objects) are supported on a specific Cisco platform/software combination.
