What Is CISCO-SVC-INTERFACE-MIB?

CISCO-SVC-INTERFACE-MIB manages and monitors SAN Volume Controller (SVC) related N-port interfaces on Cisco MDS-series Storage Area Network switches, covering the Fibre Channel virtualization ports used to connect SVC-based storage virtualization and caching appliances into the fabric. It exposes per-N-port configuration and status including VSAN membership, port World Wide Name (PWWN), assigned Fibre Channel ID (FCID), operational state, and a reason code when a port is down, plus session-level tracking objects. Its principal monitoring value is fault and status detection at the Fibre Channel fabric layer: administrators watch csiNportState and csiNportDownReason to catch a virtualization port that has gone offline before it disrupts storage traffic to the SVC appliance. Because it operates within a Fibre Channel SAN fabric, it depends on the broader Fibre Channel/VSAN addressing model (FCID, PWWN, VSAN) that Cisco's MDS platform implements. It is typically deployed on Cisco MDS 9000-series SAN switches in enterprise storage networks that integrate SAN Volume Controller-based storage virtualization. Engineers can download the CISCO-SVC-INTERFACE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An admin would poll csiNportTable/csiNportEntry keyed by csiNportIfIndex to check csiNportState and, for any port not up, read csiNportDownReason to determine why the N-port login failed. Cross-referencing csiNportVsanId, csiNportPwwn, and csiNportFcid confirms the SVC virtualization port is correctly registered in the expected VSAN with a stable Fibre Channel identity. The csiSessionTable/csiSessionEntry can further be checked to verify an active session exists for that N-port, revealing a dropped session even when the port itself still shows up.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using csiInterfaceInFrames OID:

Select a Cisco SAN/Fibre Channel switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type csiInterfaceInFrames into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of incoming frames on this interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
