Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment

Description: Extends the ENTITY-MIB with asset-tracking information including part numbers, serial numbers, hardware revisions, and firmware/software identifiers for physical entities.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-ENTITY-ASSET-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-ENTITY-ASSET-MIB?

This MIB extends the standard ENTITY-MIB (RFC 2037) with asset-tracking attributes for physical entities in a Cisco device's chassis, such as line cards, power supplies, and modules. It exposes an asset table (ceAssetTable) containing OEM string, serial number, orderable part number, hardware revision, manufacturing assembly number/revision, and firmware/software identifiers and revisions for each physical entity. This MIB is used for monitoring the software and hardware identity/version status of installed components, confirming firmware and software revisions match expected baselines, and providing serial numbers and part numbers needed for inventory and hardware lifecycle management, rather than dynamic performance data. It explicitly extends and depends on ENTITY-MIB's entPhysicalTable for entity identification. It is deployed across the full range of modular Cisco chassis-based routers and switches for hardware asset inventory and firmware compliance tracking, and administrators can download the CISCO-ENTITY-ASSET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ENTITY-ASSET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco modular chassis routers/switches
  • physical line cards, power supplies, and modules within Cisco equipment

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ceAssetTable entries, cross-referenced with ENTITY-MIB's entPhysicalIndex, to retrieve ceAssetSerialNumber and ceAssetOrderablePartNumber for automated hardware inventory. ceAssetFirmwareRevision and ceAssetSoftwareRevision let an operator verify a line card is running the expected firmware/software version, flagging components that need an upgrade. ceAssetHardwareRevision and ceAssetMfgAssyNumber support tracking hardware revisions across a fleet for RMA or compatibility purposes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • component serial number
  • part number
  • hardware revision
  • firmware version
  • software version
