Description: Manages Cisco StackMaker proprietary stacking protocol providing configuration and status for stacked switch clusters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-STACKMAKER-MIB?

CISCO-STACKMAKER-MIB manages Cisco's proprietary StackMaker stacking protocol, an early mechanism for joining multiple Cisco switches into a single managed stack cluster. It exposes configuration and identity data such as the overall stack name, a table of per-unit IP addresses within the stack, and an action object to clear stack state. For monitoring purposes it lets an administrator confirm which physical units are currently members of a stack and verify each member's management IP address is reachable and correctly assigned, which is foundational to detecting a unit that has dropped out of the stack or been misconfigured. As a legacy Cisco-proprietary protocol, it does not appear to build on other standard MIBs, functioning independently of later stacking approaches such as CISCO-STACK-MIB. It is typically deployed on older Cisco Catalyst switch families that used StackMaker for physical switch stacking before being superseded by newer stacking technologies, where CISCO-STACKMAKER-MIB SNMP monitoring helped confirm all stack members remained present and reachable.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-STACKMAKER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst switches using the legacy StackMaker stacking protocol

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll csmStackTable/csmStackEntry, keyed by csmStackIndex, to enumerate each stacked unit's csmStackIpAddress and confirm all expected members are present alongside the overall csmStackName. If a unit's expected index is missing from the table, that member has dropped out of the stack and needs investigation. The csmClearStackTable object would be used administratively to reset stack membership state when reconfiguring the cluster.

What Can Be Monitored

  • stack member IP addresses
  • stack membership/index
  • stack clear/reset action
