Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management, RADIUS and AAA, VPN and Security

Description: Manages local authentication user database entries including credentials and access privileges.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-LOCAL-AUTH-USER-MIB?

The CISCO-LOCAL-AUTH-USER-MIB manages the local authentication user database on a Cisco Network Access Server, covering users authenticated directly by the device rather than by an external AAA server. It exposes tables of user accounts and their configuration, including user type, creation time, and lifetime/expiration settings. Administrators use it to monitor the software-level security/configuration status of local accounts, tracking user counts, account creation timestamps, and lifetimes to detect stale or soon-to-expire accounts, as well as receiving notifications on account changes. It is a Cisco-specific local-auth complement to standard AAA mechanisms like RADIUS/TACACS+ rather than a replacement, used as a fallback authentication database. It is typically deployed on Cisco Network Access Server devices, such as routers, switches, or wireless controllers, that need a local user store for telnet/SSH, PPP, or 802.1x network access authentication, with a CISCO-LOCAL-AUTH-USER-MIB download available for administrators to import into their SNMP management software.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-LOCAL-AUTH-USER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Network Access Server (router, switch, or wireless controller)

Monitoring Examples

clauUserTable/clauUserEntry list local accounts by clauUserIndex, clauUserName, and clauUserType, while clauUserCreationTime and clauUserLifetime let an admin identify accounts approaching expiration. Comparing clauUserConfigTable's clauUserConfigName/clauUserConfigType against the live clauUserTable helps confirm that provisioned local users match those actually created on the device, flagging any configuration drift or accounts that failed to be created.

What Can Be Monitored

  • local user account list
  • account creation time
  • account lifetime/expiration
  • user type/access privilege
  • local-auth user change notifications
