Category: Hardware and Environment, Vendor: HP/HPE

Description: Manages Compaq/HP KVM switch port mapping and connected server console access objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CPQKVM-MIB?

CPQKVM-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Compaq/HP for KVM (Keyboard-Video-Mouse) switch products used to provide remote console access to multiple servers, including cascaded switch configurations. It exposes trap-oriented objects describing KVM events, such as user login/target information, firmware image upgrade details, session identifiers, and cascade switch topology changes. Its monitoring value is centered on software/administrative status of the KVM infrastructure rather than continuous polling: it notifies administrators of user access events (who connected to which target server), firmware upgrade outcomes (old/new version and success/failure), and changes in cascade switch naming or topology, all useful for auditing console access and confirming firmware maintenance completed correctly. It is a self-contained enterprise MIB focused on notification data rather than depending heavily on other standard MIBs. It is typically deployed in data centers using HP/Compaq KVM switches (including cascaded multi-switch setups) to manage out-of-band console access to racks of ProLiant or other servers. Engineers can download the CPQKVM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CPQKVM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP/Compaq KVM switch (including cascaded KVM switch deployments)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator monitoring KVM trap notifications would inspect cpqKvmTrapObjectUserName and cpqKvmTrapObjectTargetUserName together with cpqKvmTrapObjectServerName to audit which user accessed which server console, and cpqKvmTrapObjectSessionIdentifier to correlate a session across events. A firmware upgrade trap carrying cpqKvmTrapObjectImageCurrentVersion, cpqKvmTrapObjectImageNewVersion, and cpqKvmTrapObjectImageUpgradeResults indicating failure would flag a KVM switch that did not complete its firmware update and may need a manual retry. Changes reported via cpqKvmTrapObjectCascadeSwitchName versus cpqKvmTrapObjectOldCascadeSwitchName would reveal unexpected renaming or topology changes in a cascaded KVM deployment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • user console access events
  • target server session mapping
  • firmware image upgrade version and result
  • session identifiers
  • cascade switch topology/name changes
