Description: Monitors active and historical SIP call legs, media streams, and call quality statistics on Cisco SIP gateways.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SIP-CALLS-MIB?

CISCO-SIP-CALLS-MIB is a Cisco vendor-specific MIB that provides protocol-specific visibility into active Session Initiation Protocol (SIP, RFC 3261) calls on Cisco SIP gateways and voice equipment. Its central cSipCallActiveTable extends the generic callActiveTable from IETF DIAL-CONTROL-MIB with SIP-specific detail: call state and substate via the CSipCallState/CSipCallSubstate textual conventions (covering the full SIP transaction lifecycle from sentInvite through active, disconnecting, and dead), whether the local endpoint is a User Agent Client or Server, calling/called numbers, the signaling source/destination IP addresses and ports used for the INVITE dialog, and media-forking counts (cSipCallActiveMediaStreams, cSipCallActiveMediaStreamsActive). Monitoring it lets operators see exactly which SIP calls are in progress, what state each is in, and how many media streams are active per call, useful for diagnosing stuck SIP transactions, call setup failures, or media-forking issues in VoIP deployments. It depends on IETF DIAL-CONTROL-MIB for its base call index and INET-ADDRESS-MIB for address typing; it's deployed on Cisco SIP gateway platforms handling VoIP call signaling, and the CISCO-SIP-CALLS-MIB MIB is commonly loaded into monitoring tools to track SIP call setup and health in real time.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SIP-CALLS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco SIP-enabled voice gateways and Unified Communications voice platforms

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cSipCallActiveTable for a specific call to check cSipCallActiveState against active(8) and cSipCallActiveMediaStreamsActive against cSipCallActiveMediaStreams; a call stuck in sentInvite(4) or rcvdProceeding(5) for an extended period, or an active call showing fewer active media streams than expected, would indicate a stalled call setup or a dropped media leg.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active SIP call state and substate (FSM transitions)
  • user agent role (UAC vs. UAS)
  • calling/called number identification
  • signaling source/destination IP address and port
  • active vs. total media stream counts per call

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cSipUACActiveCalls OID:

Select a Cisco SIP-enabled voice gateway or UC voice platform as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cSipUACActiveCalls into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object reflects the number of UAC calls currently active. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
