Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Manages Service Assurance Agent Application Performance Monitor probes and results on Cisco network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SAA-APM-MIB?

CISCO-SAA-APM-MIB defines the Application Performance Monitor extension to Cisco's Service Assurance Agent (SAA), which runs TCL scripts on a Cisco device to emulate an application's data flows and measure how that application performs over the network. It belongs to the IP SLA/application-performance technology area and exposes both agent-level capacity/resource data and per-operation control and result data. Notably it includes saaApmApplFreeMemLowWaterMark, giving direct visibility into the device's available memory under load, alongside saaApmApplMaxOper/saaApmApplOperCapacity which show how close the agent is to its configured operation capacity — both classic software/resource-health indicators for the monitoring device itself. It builds on the underlying CISCO-RTTMON/SAA control framework and TCL scripting engine referenced by saaApmCtrlScriptCfgURL. It is typically deployed on Cisco routers used as active probes emulating client application behavior (e.g. HTTP, database, or custom TCL-scripted transactions) for application performance monitoring in enterprise WANs. Engineers can download the CISCO-SAA-APM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SAA-APM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router (SAA/IP SLA probe)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll saaApmApplFreeMemLowWaterMark and saaApmApplMaxOper/saaApmApplOperCapacity to see whether the device running the APM agent is running low on memory or has hit its maximum number of concurrent operations, both of which would cause new APM probes to fail to launch. For a specific probe, saaApmCtrlTable exposes saaApmCtrlScriptCfgURL, saaApmCtrlOwner, saaApmCtrlInitDataTrans and saaApmCtrlDataTransTime per saaApmCtrlIndex, so an admin can confirm a given TCL-scripted application emulation actually completed its data transfer within an expected time window, flagging application-level slowdowns.

What Can Be Monitored

  • agent free memory low-water mark
  • max/current operation capacity
  • script config URL per probe
  • data transfer initiation/completion time
