Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management, Hardware and Environment

Description: Monitors Single Event Upset (SEU) hardware error detection and mitigation due to cosmic ray radiation on Cisco platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SEU-MITIGATION-MIB?

CISCO-SEU-MITIGATION-MIB is a Cisco proprietary module that reports on Single Event Upset (SEU) detection and mitigation, a hardware reliability feature protecting Cisco IOS equipment deployed in high-radiation environments such as geosynchronous satellites from cosmic-ray-induced bit errors in memory, caches, and registers. Its data covers memory-scrubbing configuration and status per physical entity, including whether rate-adaptive or algorithmic scrubbing is enabled, scrub run intervals and units, and retry/delta interval parameters. This module is explicitly a hardware health monitoring tool, letting operators confirm that memory-scrubbing mitigation is actively running and correctly tuned on radiation-exposed hardware, which is critical for catching silent memory corruption before it causes a device or software fault. It ties into the standard ENTITY-MIB via csmScrubEntPhysicalIndex to associate scrub status with a specific physical entity in the device's inventory. It is deployed on Cisco IOS routers hardened for and operating in radiation-tolerant satellite communication payloads, where the CISCO-SEU-MITIGATION-MIB MIB is the SNMP interface administrators poll to confirm scrub status remotely.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SEU-MITIGATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS routers hardened for satellite payloads (e.g. Cisco IRIS/18400 Space Router)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls csmScrubTable/csmScrubEntry keyed by csmScrubIndex and csmScrubEntPhysicalIndex to confirm csmScrubAlgorithmEnabled is true and csmScrubRateAdaptive reflects the intended scrubbing mode for a given memory component. Reviewing csmScrubRunInterval and csmScrubRunIntervalUnits against csmScrubRetryInterval helps verify the scrub cadence matches the radiation environment's risk profile, and an unexpectedly disabled csmScrubScrubName entry would indicate a memory region no longer protected against cosmic-ray-induced bit errors.

What Can Be Monitored

  • memory scrub algorithm enabled state
  • rate-adaptive scrubbing mode
  • scrub run interval
  • retry/delta interval settings
  • per-physical-entity scrub status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using csmScrubErrorsSingleBit OID:

Select a Cisco IOS router (satellite-hardened) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type csmScrubErrorsSingleBit into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object counts the single-bit errors for the specific error type described by csmScrubErrorsDescription. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
