Category: Device Management, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys
Description: Manages Cabletron syslog configuration including server address, facility, severity filtering, and message routing.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CTRON-SYSLOG?
CTRON-SYSLOG is a Cabletron Systems (later Enterasys) proprietary MIB for managing the syslog subsystem on Cabletron networking equipment, controlling how the device generates, filters, and forwards log messages to remote syslog servers. It exposes configuration objects for server address, facility and severity filtering, and "log window" definitions that match and route specific event or client strings, as well as administrative controls to freeze, reset, or re-arm those windows. Because syslog output typically carries hardware fault, link-state, and software-event notifications, this MIB is valuable for monitoring the overall software/event health of the device by tracking whether logging is active, correctly filtered, and whether particular log windows have captured matching fault conditions. It operates independently of but complements the standard SYSLOG-MSG-MIB/SNMPv2 notification mechanisms already present on the device. Typical deployment is on legacy Cabletron/Enterasys switches and hubs where centralized logging to a syslog collector is used for network operations monitoring. Engineers can download the CTRON-SYSLOG file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-SYSLOG. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cabletron/Enterasys network switch or hub
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll logWindowTable/logWindowEntry to see each configured log window's ltLogString, ltClientMatchString, and ltEventMatchString, checking whether a specific error pattern (e.g. a link-flap or hardware fault message) has been captured by ltWindowOperation. scAdminStatus and scLastChange in serverConfig reveal whether the syslog server integration is enabled and when its configuration last changed, letting staff confirm logs are actually being forwarded off-box for later analysis.
What Can Be Monitored
- syslog server configuration
- facility/severity filtering
- log window match strings
- log window freeze/reset state
- last configuration change time
