Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON), SNMP Framework

Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for RMON2 application-layer traffic monitoring on Cisco network platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-RMON2-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-RMON2-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module that declares which parts of the standard RMON2-MIB (remote network monitoring, application-layer traffic analysis) a given Cisco device or IOS release actually implements. It belongs to Cisco's routing/switching platform family and the broader IETF RMON (Remote Network Monitoring) technology area. Rather than exposing live counters or configuration itself, it enumerates supported groups, tables, and variations of RMON2-MIB so a management station can determine feature support before polling. As a capabilities statement it carries no monitorable runtime data of its own — no uptime, temperature, CPU, memory, power, disk, or process/service objects — its role is purely to describe agent support for the referenced MIB. The CISCO-RMON2-CAPABILITY MIB has an explicit dependency on RMON2-MIB (RFC 2021) and is typically consulted by NMS tools during MIB compatibility discovery, bundled in Cisco IOS/IOS-XE images on routers and switches.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-RMON2-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS/IOS-XE routers and switches

Monitoring Examples

As an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module, CISCO-RMON2-CAPABILITY defines no runtime data objects of its own (sample_objects is empty) — it only cross-references OBJECT-GROUP and MODULE-COMPLIANCE clauses from RMON2-MIB to state which are supported. There is no realistic 'poll this counter' scenario for it; an NMS instead reads it once to learn feature support before deciding whether to enable RMON2 application-layer monitoring on the device.
