Category: Cisco Devices, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for RS-232 serial interface management on Cisco routing platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-RS-232-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-RS-232-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module that declares which parts of the standard RS-232-MIB a given Cisco device/agent implementation actually supports, rather than defining any management objects of its own. It exposes no configuration or runtime data; its sole content is capability statements (supported groups/variations) tied to the RS-232-MIB. Because it has no data objects, it provides no direct hardware or software status telemetry for monitoring -- it only tells an SNMP manager what to expect when it queries the real RS-232-MIB on that Cisco platform. Its entire purpose is a dependency declaration: it is meaningless without the standard IETF RS-232-MIB it describes. It would be referenced during SNMP agent capability negotiation/documentation for Cisco routers with RS-232 auxiliary/console serial interfaces, and network engineers consulting the CISCO-RS-232-CAPABILITY MIB use it to confirm exactly which RS-232-MIB variations a given agent build implements.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-RS-232-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router with RS-232 serial interface

Monitoring Examples

This is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module with no runtime data objects, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe honestly -- it only documents which RS-232-MIB objects and variations the Cisco agent supports.
