Description: Manages Fibre Channel N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) virtual N-Ports on Cisco MDS SAN switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-NPORT-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB?
CISCO-NPORT-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB manages Fibre Channel N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV/NPV) on Cisco MDS storage-area-network (SAN) switches operating in NPV mode, where edge switches pass traffic to core switches without consuming a full FC domain ID. It exposes traffic load-balancing configuration and traffic-mapping tables that bind NPV server (edge) interfaces to specific NPV core switch uplinks. Its monitoring value is primarily software/configuration status: verifying that traffic maps between edge ("from") interfaces and core ("to") interface lists are correctly established and active, which helps diagnose SAN connectivity or load-balancing misconfigurations. It is Cisco-proprietary and specific to the NPV architecture built on standard Fibre Channel concepts. It is deployed in Cisco MDS SAN fabrics using NPV to reduce domain ID consumption in large storage networks, where CISCO-NPORT-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB SNMP monitoring helps confirm edge-to-core traffic maps stay correctly bound.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-NPORT-VIRTUALIZATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco MDS SAN switch (NPV/NPIV edge switch)
Monitoring Examples
A SAN administrator would poll cnpvTrafficMapTable (cnpvTrafficMapFromIfIndex, cnpvTrafficMapToIfIndexList) to verify that a given edge (NPV) interface is correctly mapped to its intended set of core-switch uplinks. cnpvTrafficMapRowStatus reveals whether a traffic map entry is active or not-in-service, indicating a broken mapping. cnpvTrafficAutoLoadbalance shows whether automatic load-balancing across uplinks is enabled, and cnpvTrafficMapLastChange helps correlate a recent SAN connectivity issue with a configuration change.
What Can Be Monitored
- traffic map from/to interface bindings
- auto load-balancing status
- traffic map row status
- last configuration change timestamp
