Description: Monitors Media Delivery Index metrics measuring video and voice stream quality on Cisco network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-MDI-METRICS-MIB?

CISCO-MDI-METRICS-MIB is a Cisco MIB implementing the IETF Media Delivery Index (MDI, RFC 4445) metric for assessing streaming media quality -- video, VoIP, and other time-sensitive traffic -- on Cisco devices. It exposes performance-counter data per monitored media flow: configured bit rate and packet size, lost packet counts, Media Loss Rate (MLR) with scale/precision, and Media Delay Factor (MDC). Its monitoring role is squarely performance/quality-of-service status rather than hardware health: administrators use lost-packet and MLR/MDC values to detect jitter buffer stress, packet loss, or delay-variation problems affecting video/voice streams in real time. It explicitly implements the IETF RFC 4445 MDI standard, tying its metric definitions directly to that specification. It is deployed on Cisco routers/switches carrying video (e.g., IPTV, video conferencing) or VoIP traffic where stream-quality monitoring is required. Engineers can download the CISCO-MDI-METRICS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-MDI-METRICS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router/switch carrying video or VoIP traffic

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cfmMdiMetricsTable's cfmMdiMetricsMlr and cfmMdiMetricsMdc for a monitored flow to see rising media loss rate or delay factor, signaling an under-provisioned link or excessive jitter affecting a video stream. cfmMdiMetricsLostPkts gives the raw packet-loss count backing the MLR calculation, while cfmMdiMetricsCfgBitRate and cfmMdiMetricsCfgMediaPktSize confirm the flow's expected profile for comparison. cfmMdiMetricsValid would be checked first to confirm the metrics entry is currently active/valid before trusting the other values.

What Can Be Monitored

  • media loss rate (MLR)
  • media delay factor (MDC)
  • lost packet count
  • configured bit rate and packet size per flow
  • metrics validity status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cfmMdiMetricsLostPkts OID:

Select a Cisco router/switch carrying video or VoIP traffic (MDI metrics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cfmMdiMetricsLostPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object indicates the number of packets lost for the traffic flow. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
