Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for Medium Attachment Unit (MAU) management on Cisco network interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-MAU-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-MAU-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module that declares which parts of the standard IETF MAU-MIB (Medium Attachment Unit MIB, RFC 3636) a particular Cisco SNMP agent implementation supports. It does not define its own data objects; instead it is a conformance/compatibility statement describing supported groups, tables, and variations of the underlying MAU-MIB for Ethernet PHY/transceiver management. As such it has no monitoring value on its own for hardware or software status - the actual MAU status data (link state, jabber, loopback) comes from the standard MAU-MIB it references. It has an explicit, direct dependency on the IETF MAU-MIB, which it exists solely to describe compatibility with. It is used internally by network management systems and MIB compilers to determine which MAU-MIB features are actually implemented on a given Cisco device before attempting to poll them. Engineers can download the CISCO-MAU-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-MAU-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switch/router with Ethernet MAU interfaces (conformance declaration only)

Monitoring Examples

This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module with no data objects of its own, so there is no runtime monitoring scenario to describe; it simply enumerates which MAU-MIB groups and objects the Cisco agent implements, for use by management tools during MIB capability negotiation.
