What Is FOKUS-MIB?

FOKUS-MIB is the enterprise-registration MIB for the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS), defining only the root of the FOKUS OID subtree used as a parent arc for further enterprise MIB registrations. Notably, it underlies the OID tree used by the FreeBSD bsnmpd SNMP daemon's private extension modules. It contains no data or trap objects of its own - it is purely a structural/registration MIB with an empty object set, so it exposes no hardware, software, performance, or fault information directly. Because it defines no monitorable leaf objects, it cannot be used on its own to monitor uptime, temperature, CPU/memory load, or any other device status; any actual monitoring comes from other MIBs registered beneath this arc (e.g. bsnmpd modules). It is deployed only as a namespace anchor referenced by other MIB modules built on FreeBSD's bsnmpd SNMP agent, not as a standalone monitored entity. Engineers can download the FOKUS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FOKUS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • systems running the FreeBSD bsnmpd SNMP daemon

Monitoring Examples

This module defines no runtime data objects - its sample_objects list is empty because it is purely an OID-tree registration point ("the root of the Fokus enterprises tree"), so there is no polling scenario to describe honestly; any actual monitoring happens through child MIBs registered under this arc, such as the FreeBSD bsnmpd private MIBs.
