Organization: Cisco Systems, Inc.

Last Updated: 2004-11-19

Category: Alarm and Event Management, Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Monitors per-link error rates and generates threshold-based alarms for link quality degradation.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-LINK-ERROR-MONITOR-MIB?

CISCO-LINK-ERROR-MONITOR-MIB implements Cisco's Link Error Monitoring feature, which watches per-interface link error counters and raises alarms or takes action when error rates cross configurable thresholds across consecutive sampling intervals. It exposes global configuration (enable state, sampling interval and count, configured action), a per-error-type threshold table with low/high bounds, and a per-interface counter table tracking the actual error counts. This is squarely a fault/hardware-health monitoring MIB for physical interfaces -- it lets an administrator detect degrading cabling, optics, or interface hardware before an interface fails outright, and can trigger automated remediation such as error-disabling a port. It builds conceptually on standard interface error counters similar to those in IF-MIB. It is typically deployed on Cisco switches/routers to proactively guard against flapping or failing physical links. Engineers can download the CISCO-LINK-ERROR-MONITOR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-LINK-ERROR-MONITOR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switches and routers

Monitoring Examples

An admin checks clemIfCounterTable/clemIfCounterEntry per interface for current error counts, and cross-references clemThresholdTable entries (clemThresholdLow/clemThresholdHigh per clemThresholdCounterType) to see which counters and bounds trigger an alarm. With clemNotifEnable set, exceeding a threshold for clemSamplingTimes consecutive intervals of clemSamplingInterval seconds fires a notification and invokes clemAction (e.g. shutting the interface down) -- useful for catching a transceiver or cable degrading with rising error counts.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-interface error counters
  • error threshold configuration (low/high)
  • sampling interval and consecutive-sample count
  • link error monitoring enabled state
  • configured error action
  • error notification enable state
