All MIBs › CISCO-L2L3-INTERFACE-CONFIG-MIB
Organization: Cisco Systems, Inc.
Last Updated: 2000-05-10
Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, VLAN and Bridging
Description: Manages the switching of network interfaces between Layer 2 (switchport) and Layer 3 (routed) modes.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-L2L3-INTERFACE-CONFIG-MIB?
The CISCO-L2L3-INTERFACE-CONFIG-MIB manages and monitors whether a network interface on a Cisco switch operates in Layer 2 switchport mode or Layer 3 routed mode. It exposes a single interface configuration table containing the administrative and operational mode of each interface, allowing both configuration and status verification. Operators use it primarily to monitor the software-configuration status of interfaces, confirming that the operational mode reflected in cL2L3IfModeOper matches the intended administrative setting in cL2L3IfModeAdmin, which reveals misconfigurations or failed mode transitions that could break VLAN or routing connectivity. It is a Cisco-specific extension layered on top of standard interface management such as IF-MIB rather than an independent standard. It is typically deployed on Cisco multilayer switches where ports are dynamically repurposed between switched and routed roles depending on network design. Engineers can download the CISCO-L2L3-INTERFACE-CONFIG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-L2L3-INTERFACE-CONFIG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco multilayer switch
Monitoring Examples
Polling cL2L3IfTable/cL2L3IfEntry for a given interface index returns cL2L3IfModeAdmin and cL2L3IfModeOper; a mismatch between the two indicates the interface failed to apply its configured mode, which would explain unexpected Layer 2/Layer 3 behavior on that port. An admin scripting a bulk check across cL2L3IfTable can quickly spot any interfaces stuck in the wrong operational mode after a configuration change or reload.
What Can Be Monitored
- interface administrative L2/L3 mode
- interface operational L2/L3 mode
- mode mismatch detection
