Organization: Cisco System Inc.
Last Updated: 2003-07-22
Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON), VLAN and Bridging
Description: Monitors Layer 2 device health metrics including CPU, memory, and interface error statistics.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-L2-DEV-MONITORING-MIB?
This is a Cisco enterprise MIB used on Cisco Layer 2 wireless bridge/radio equipment to support hot-standby monitoring, where a standby L2 device supervises the health of an active peer device and manages switch-over configuration. It exposes standby-mode status, notification enablement, and a table of monitored active-device entries keyed by MAC address, along with polling frequency and timeout parameters. It is explicitly used to monitor the availability/hardware status of the active device from the standby's perspective, functioning as a heartbeat check that detects when the active unit stops responding within its configured timeout, triggering failover. It relies on general Cisco enterprise MIB and standard SNMP notification conventions rather than any specific external standard. It is deployed in redundant Cisco point-to-point or point-to-multipoint wireless bridge pairs configured for hot-standby operation, where the standby unit continuously checks on the active unit's presence. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-L2-DEV-MONITORING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-L2-DEV-MONITORING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco wireless bridge/radio
- Cisco Layer 2 hot-standby device pair
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls cl2DevMonActiveTable/cl2DevMonActiveEntry rows, keyed by cl2DevMonActiveMacAddress, to see which active device the standby unit is supervising along with cl2DevMonActivePollingFrequency and cl2DevMonActivePollingTimeOut. If the active device stops responding within the configured timeout, cl2DevMonInStandbyMode changes and, if cl2DevMonNotifEnabled is set, a notification is raised indicating a switchover condition. Changes to a monitored entry's lifecycle are tracked via cl2DevMonActiveRowStatus, letting an operator confirm whether a peer entry is active, being created, or removed.
What Can Be Monitored
- active device reachability
- standby mode status
- polling frequency
- polling timeout
- peer MAC address
- notification enablement
