Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON), Quality of Service

Description: Manages IP SLA UDP and ICMP jitter probes for measuring one-way and round-trip delay variation.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IPSLA-JITTER-MIB?

CISCO-IPSLA-JITTER-MIB is a Cisco MIB defining templates for IP SLA (Service Level Agreement) UDP Jitter and ICMP Jitter operations, which generate synthetic UDP or ICMP Timestamp traffic to measure delay variance, packet loss, and one-way/round-trip latency between network devices. It exposes template tables for both operation types carrying control-enable state, timeout, codec type/interval/payload/packet-count (for VoIP-realistic UDP jitter tests), and probe interval, alongside notification, object, and conformance groups. This is a network performance-monitoring MIB used to proactively assess path quality — rising jitter, packet loss, or RTT measured by these active probes reveals a degrading WAN link or congested path before it visibly impacts voice/video quality, complementing passive interface counters with active synthetic testing. It depends on Cisco's broader IP SLA (formerly RTR/SAA) MIB framework, which defines the control/scheduling objects that these jitter-specific templates plug into. It is deployed on Cisco routers and switches running IP SLA, typically at branch/WAN edge locations where operators need SLA verification for voice, video, or general IP transport. Engineers can download the CISCO-IPSLA-JITTER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IPSLA-JITTER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router
  • Cisco switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would configure a template in cipslaUdpJitterTmplTable/cipslaUdpJitterTmplEntry, setting cipslaUdpJitterTmplCodecType and cipslaUdpJitterTmplCodecInterval/cipslaUdpJitterTmplCodecPayload/cipslaUdpJitterTmplCodecNumPkts to emulate a specific VoIP codec's traffic pattern, then enable it via cipslaUdpJitterTmplControlEnable. Degrading measured jitter/loss reported against a template's cipslaUdpJitterTmplTimeOut threshold (via the broader IP SLA operational MIB using this template) would indicate a WAN path no longer meeting its voice-quality SLA. ciscoIpSlaJitterMIBNotifs would be watched to catch threshold-violation alerts without continuously polling every probe's results.

What Can Be Monitored

  • jitter template control-enable state
  • codec type/interval/payload for jitter probes
  • probe timeout and interval settings
  • measured jitter/packet loss/RTT (via IP SLA framework)
  • jitter threshold violation notifications
