Category: Cisco Devices

Description: Provides IP traffic statistics categorized by IP precedence and associated MAC addresses.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-IP-STAT-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-IP-STAT-MIB?

CISCO-IP-STAT-MIB supplements OLD-CISCO-IP-MIB with additional IP traffic accounting statistics, corresponding to the 'ip accounting precedence/mac-address' CLI feature on Cisco routers. It exposes two tables: one breaking down switched packet and byte counts by IP precedence value and traffic direction, and another breaking down the same counters by source MAC address and direction. This is a traffic-performance-counter MIB used to monitor per-precedence and per-MAC-address forwarding load on an interface, helping identify QoS-class utilization or a particular host generating excessive traffic -- a software/traffic performance indicator rather than physical hardware health. It is explicitly a supplement to the existing IP accounting objects in OLD-CISCO-IP-MIB. It is deployed on Cisco routers with 'ip accounting' enabled on WAN/LAN interfaces for traffic analysis and capacity planning. Engineers can download the CISCO-IP-STAT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IP-STAT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers with IP accounting enabled
  • Cisco IOS routers

Monitoring Examples

cipPrecedenceTable/cipPrecedenceEntry reports cipPrecedenceSwitchedPkts and cipPrecedenceSwitchedBytes per cipPrecedenceIpPrecedence value and cipPrecedenceDirection, letting an operator see how much traffic arrives at each precedence class; cipMacTable/cipMacEntry reports the same counters keyed by cipMacAddress. A sudden spike in cipMacSwitchedBytes for one cipMacAddress would reveal a single host dominating link bandwidth, while a skew in cipPrecedenceSwitchedPkts toward low-priority values could indicate a misclassified traffic source.

What Can Be Monitored

  • switched packets/bytes by IP precedence
  • switched packets/bytes by source MAC address
  • traffic direction (input/output) breakdown

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cipPrecedenceSwitchedPkts OID:

Select a Cisco IOS router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cipPrecedenceSwitchedPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the traffic, in packets, at the cipPrecedenceIpPrecedence precedence. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
