Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols

Description: Manages automatic IP network topology discovery and neighbor relationship tracking.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IP-NW-DISCOVERY-MIB?

CISCO-IP-NW-DISCOVERY-MIB discovers disjoint IP networks reachable over Gigabit Ethernet interfaces within a Fibre Channel fabric, used in Cisco storage-fabric switches offering IP storage (FCIP) services. It exposes configuration for discovery scope per Gigabit Ethernet interface and address, a command/status interface to trigger discovery runs, and a results table of discovered IP networks. Its monitoring emphasis is on discovery job status and software-observed network topology rather than physical hardware health -- the command-status object reports whether a discovery run completed successfully, functioning like a job-status indicator, and the results table reflects the current set of IP networks visible in the fabric. It relies on Fibre Channel fabric/WWN concepts and Gigabit Ethernet interface indices drawn from IF-MIB. It is deployed on Cisco MDS/Nexus storage fabric switches with FCIP gateway functionality. Engineers can download the CISCO-IP-NW-DISCOVERY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IP-NW-DISCOVERY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS/storage fabric switches with Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet (FCIP) interfaces

Monitoring Examples

cIpNetworkDiscoveryCommand together with cIpNetworkDiscoveryCmdStatus lets an operator kick off a discovery run against a specified cIpNetworkGigEIfIndexToDiscover and poll whether it completed, failed, or is still in progress, with results landing in cIpNetworkTable. If cIpNetworkDiscoveryCmdStatus never reaches a completed state, or cIpNetworkTable stops reflecting a previously seen IP network, that points to a connectivity or configuration problem on the Gigabit Ethernet fabric interface being discovered.

What Can Be Monitored

  • discovered IP networks in the fabric
  • discovery command execution status
  • discovery scope/target interface configuration
  • automatic discovery enable/delay settings
