Description: Extends the IETF VPLS BGP MIB for Virtual Private LAN Service BGP signaling management on Cisco devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-IETF-VPLS-BGP-EXT-MIB?
CISCO-IETF-VPLS-BGP-EXT-MIB is a Cisco extension of the IETF VPLS MIB for managing BGP-based Virtual Private LAN Service instances over an underlying pseudowire/MPLS network on Cisco provider-edge (PE) routers. It exposes configuration tables for VPLS instance route distinguishers and VE-ID range sizing (ciVplsBgpExtConfigTable), route-target import/export policy (civplsBgpExtRTTable), and virtual-edge (VE) identifiers (ciVplsBgpExtVETable), along with row-status and storage-type controls for provisioning. Its role is primarily configuration/software-state monitoring for the VPLS control plane - verifying that route distinguishers, route targets, and VE ranges are correctly provisioned and that BGP signaling for a VPLS instance is set up consistently across PE routers, rather than exposing physical hardware sensors. It explicitly extends the IETF VPLS MIB (RFC 4188-lineage) and depends on underlying BGP/MPLS/pseudowire MIBs for the transport layer. It is deployed by service providers running Cisco PE routers to deliver BGP auto-discovered/signaled VPLS Ethernet services to enterprise customers. Engineers can download the CISCO-IETF-VPLS-BGP-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IETF-VPLS-BGP-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco provider-edge routers (e.g. ASR 9000, 7600 series) running BGP-signalled VPLS
Monitoring Examples
A provider engineer would check ciVplsBgpExtConfigTable's ciVplsBgpExtConfigRouteDistinguisher and ciVplsBgpExtConfigVERangeSize to confirm a VPLS instance's BGP identifiers are consistent across all participating PEs. civplsBgpExtRTTable (ciVplsBgpExtRTType/ciVplsBgpExtRT) is polled to verify the correct route-target import/export policy is attached, which if wrong would prevent BGP auto-discovery of remote PEs. ciVplsBgpExtVETable's entries and their ciVplsBgpExtRTRowStatus reveal whether a given VE has been successfully provisioned (active) or is stuck in a notReady state.
What Can Be Monitored
- route distinguisher configuration
- VE-ID range size
- route-target import/export policy
- VE entry provisioning/row status
