Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capability for the IP protocol stack MIB on Cisco platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IP-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-IP-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module that formally documents which objects, tables, and conformance groups of the standard IETF IP-MIB a particular Cisco platform or IOS release actually implements. It contains no runtime data objects of its own; instead it is a compliance/mapping document used by network management systems and MIB compilers to determine feature support before polling. It therefore plays no direct role in hardware or software health monitoring, but it is essential supporting metadata for correctly interpreting IP-MIB data (interface IP addressing, forwarding, ICMP statistics) on Cisco gear. Its dependency on IP-MIB (RFC 4293 and predecessors) is explicit and total, since its entire content is a capabilities statement about that MIB. It is typically consulted by MIB management tools during device onboarding to determine which parts of IP-MIB are safe to poll on a given Cisco platform. Engineers can download the CISCO-IP-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IP-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers and switches running IOS/IOS-XE

Monitoring Examples

This is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module with no runtime data objects, so no monitoring scenario can be honestly described; it exists purely to declare which IP-MIB groups and objects a Cisco device implements. A management system would consult it during MIB compilation/discovery rather than during ongoing polling.
