Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment

Description: Provides management objects for controlling power-on, power-off, and reset operations for hardware modules in Cisco router and switch chassis.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-HW-MODULE-CONTROL-MIB?

CISCO-HW-MODULE-CONTROL-MIB provides configuration and control objects for managing hardware modules and line cards within Cisco chassis-based routers and switches, with particular focus on bandwidth oversubscription settings and clearing of Head-of-Line (HoL) blocking on port groups. It exposes per-module and per-port-group tables describing oversubscription capability and current status, letting operators see whether a group of ports is running in an oversubscribed forwarding-fabric mode. This is squarely a hardware status/configuration MIB: it lets administrators detect when internal switching fabric bandwidth allocated to a port group is insufficient for the aggregate connection speeds, a condition that can silently degrade throughput without an obvious link-level fault. It is a Cisco proprietary MIB with no direct IETF dependency, complementing Cisco's broader entity/module and interface MIBs. It is deployed on modular Cisco chassis switches and routers where individual hardware modules and port groups need bandwidth and blocking-state control. Engineers can download the CISCO-HW-MODULE-CONTROL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-HW-MODULE-CONTROL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco modular chassis routers and switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll chmcOversubModuleTable/chmcOversubModuleEntry to check chmcOversubModOversubStatus and chmcOversubModuleCapabilities for each installed module. Within chmcOversubPortGroupTable, chmcOversubPortGrpOversubStatus reveals which port groups (identified via chmcOversubPortGrpIfIndexList) are currently oversubscribed, and chmcOversubPortGrpClearBlkStatus can be set to clear a detected Head-of-Line blocking condition. Persistent oversubscription status on a heavily used port group would explain unexpected throughput degradation despite healthy individual link states.

What Can Be Monitored

  • module oversubscription status
  • port group oversubscription status
  • Head-of-Line blocking clear status
  • port group to interface mapping
  • hardware module capabilities
