Description: Provides management objects for associating metadata attributes with network flows for enhanced classification on Cisco platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-FLOW-METADATA-MIB?
CISCO-FLOW-METADATA-MIB is a Cisco MIB supporting the Medianet flow metadata framework, which attaches descriptive metadata attributes to network traffic flows so classification and quality information can be shared between components on a network element and across the network. It centers on a flow table (cfmMetadataFlowTable) identifying each tracked flow by protocol type, source/destination address and port, and an SSRC (synchronization source, indicating RTP media flows), plus a companion flow-attribute table carrying the actual metadata key/value pairs. This is a traffic-classification/performance-visibility MIB rather than a hardware-health MIB — it monitors which flows are being tagged with metadata and what that metadata says (e.g., application or media stream identity) rather than temperature, power, or CPU load. It is a Cisco-specific extension that depends on the broader Medianet architecture and typically works alongside Cisco IP SLA and QoS MIBs for a complete picture of media flow performance. It is deployed on Cisco routers/switches in Medianet-enabled enterprise or service-provider networks carrying voice/video traffic that benefits from flow-aware classification. Engineers can download the CISCO-FLOW-METADATA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FLOW-METADATA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco router
- Cisco switch (Medianet-enabled)
Monitoring Examples
An operator would walk cfmMetadataFlowTable/cfmMetadataFlowEntry to see active flows identified by cfmMetadataFlowId, cfmMetadataFlowProtocolType, cfmMetadataFlowSrcAddr/cfmMetadataFlowSrcPort, and cfmMetadataFlowDestAddr/cfmMetadataFlowDestPort, and cross-reference cfmMetadataFlowSSRC to confirm a flow is RTP-based media traffic. The companion cfmMetadataFlowAttrTable would then be checked for the specific metadata attributes tagged to that flow, and cFlowMetadataMIBNotifs would alert if metadata association changes unexpectedly — useful for confirming a media-priority policy is correctly classifying a given video conferencing stream.
What Can Be Monitored
- tracked flow identity (protocol, source/destination address and port)
- RTP SSRC identification
- flow metadata attribute values
- flow metadata change notifications
