Category: Cisco Devices, SNMP Framework, VLAN and Bridging
Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for MAC address change and move notification on Cisco switching platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY?
CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module, a conformance/meta-MIB that declares which objects and features of the companion CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB a particular Cisco switch platform's SNMP agent actually implements. It belongs to Cisco's Catalyst/switching product line and does not itself expose any runtime management data — it is purely a capabilities statement used by network management systems and MIB compilers to determine feature support per device and software version. As such it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status; its value is indirect, helping an NMS know in advance whether MAC address change/move notification features are supported on a given box before attempting to configure or poll them. It is entirely dependent on, and meaningless without, its companion CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB, whose object definitions it profiles. It is used internally by network management tools and MIB-compliance databases as a CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY reference, rather than being queried live against Cisco Catalyst switches in production.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco Catalyst switching platforms (capabilities profile only)
Monitoring Examples
This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module with no runtime data objects — it defines which variations of CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB objects are supported per Cisco platform/software release rather than exposing anything an administrator would poll directly, so no realistic monitoring scenario applies.
