Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Provides management objects for configuring Fibre Channel Storage Data Virtualization (SDV) on Cisco MDS storage networking platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-FC-SDV-MIB?

CISCO-FC-SDV-MIB manages Fibre Channel Storage Data Virtualization (SDV) on Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switching platforms, a feature that lets a single physical storage device be presented as multiple virtual devices to different hosts/fabrics. It exposes configuration objects for virtual devices, including their identity, fabric/domain association, Fibre Channel IDs, port World Wide Names, real-device mappings, and storage type, along with row-status controls for provisioning and a config-commit workflow. Its monitoring role is largely configuration/state-oriented rather than classic hardware health: administrators use it to verify that virtual device mappings are correctly provisioned and committed, and to detect stale or inconsistent SDV configuration versus the underlying physical storage fabric, which can indicate storage-provisioning errors. It notably depends on CISCO-CFS-MIB for the config-commit/distribution mechanism referenced in its glossary, tying SDV configuration changes to Cisco Fabric Services (CFS) infrastructure. It is deployed on Cisco MDS 9000-series Fibre Channel directors/switches in SAN environments practicing storage virtualization for multi-host device sharing. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-FC-SDV-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FC-SDV-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS 9000-series Fibre Channel SAN switches/directors

Monitoring Examples

A SAN administrator would query cFcSdvVirtDeviceTable/cFcSdvVirtDeviceEntry to check cFcSdvVdPwwn and cFcSdvVdNwwn assignments against cFcSdvVdRealDevMapList, confirming a virtual device is correctly mapped to its intended physical storage LUN. Checking cFcSdvVdFcId versus cFcSdvVdAssignedFcId helps detect a virtual device that hasn't yet received its assigned FCID, which would prevent host-side access. The cFcSdvVdRowStatus column reveals whether a virtual device entry is active, notReady, or pending a CFS config commit, flagging incomplete SDV provisioning.

What Can Be Monitored

  • virtual device to real device mapping
  • port/node WWN assignment
  • FCID assignment status
  • virtual device storage type
  • row/provisioning status of virtual devices
