What Is CISCO-GGSN-SERVICE-AWARE-MIB?

CISCO-GGSN-SERVICE-AWARE-MIB extends the Cisco GGSN object model (building on CISCO-GGSN-MIB) to cover the 'service-aware' billing and policy-enforcement feature, which classifies subscriber traffic within a PDP context into distinct billable services in cooperation with a Content/Charging Services Gateway (CSG) and Diameter Credit Control Application (DCCA). It exposes counters for inbound/outbound messages and octets exchanged with the CSG, plus service authentication, re-authentication, quota-return, and service-stop request/response counts. Its monitoring value is chiefly software/service health: tracking message and octet throughput between GGSN and CSG, and counting authentication/quota transaction volumes and failures, reveals whether the real-time credit-control and service-classification pipeline is functioning correctly. It explicitly depends on and enhances CISCO-GGSN-MIB, and its DCCA-based credit control interacts with external Diameter-based charging infrastructure. It is deployed on Cisco GGSN platforms in mobile operator GPRS/UMTS networks requiring real-time, per-service prepaid billing. Comparing cGgsnSACsgServiceAuthReqs to cGgsnSACsgServiceAuthResps reveals whether authentication requests are being answered, with a growing gap pointing to a stalled or overloaded credit-control server. cGgsnSACsgQuotaReturnReqs and cGgsnSACsgQuotaReturns track quota-return transaction volume, useful for spotting subscribers whose sessions are churning through quota abnormally fast.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cGgsnSAQsRcvdRequests OID:

Select a Cisco GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cGgsnSAQsRcvdRequests into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object indicates the number of request messages received from the CSG. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
