Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces
Description: Extends the standard EtherLike-MIB with Cisco-specific objects for additional Ethernet interface statistics and configuration.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-ETHERLIKE-EXT-MIB?
CISCO-ETHERLIKE-EXT-MIB is a Cisco extension to the standard IETF EtherLike-MIB, adding objects for Ethernet-like interfaces that are either omitted from the standard MIB or specific to Cisco hardware. It provides configuration and operational data on 802.3 flow-control (pause frames) and on Ethernet sub-interfaces, including per-interface admin/oper pause mode and sub-interface counts. From a monitoring standpoint it is primarily used to check interface-level configuration and operational health: whether flow control is administratively enabled versus actually negotiated/operating, and how many logical sub-interfaces exist on a physical Ethernet port, which can indicate misconfiguration or unexpected sub-interface proliferation. It explicitly complements the standard IETF EtherLike-MIB, depending on that MIB for baseline Ethernet statistics while adding Cisco-only detail. It is deployed on Cisco switches and routers with Ethernet interfaces where administrators need finer-grained visibility into pause-frame behavior and sub-interface structure than the standard MIB provides. Engineers can download the CISCO-ETHERLIKE-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ETHERLIKE-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco switches and routers with Ethernet/Ethernet-like interfaces
Monitoring Examples
An engineer troubleshooting a duplex/flow-control mismatch would poll ceeDot3PauseExtTable/ceeDot3PauseExtEntry to compare ceeDot3PauseExtAdminMode against ceeDot3PauseExtOperMode on a given port, spotting cases where pause frames were configured but failed to negotiate with the link partner. Polling ceeSubInterfaceTable's ceeSubInterfaceCount per physical interface would reveal an unexpectedly high number of sub-interfaces on a trunk port, which could point to a scripting error or unauthorized VLAN sub-interface creation. This data is typically cross-referenced against standard IF-MIB interface counters for full-picture Ethernet link diagnostics.
What Can Be Monitored
- 802.3 pause (flow control) admin mode
- 802.3 pause operational mode
- sub-interface count per physical Ethernet interface
