Description: Manages Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP, IEC 62439-3) dual-network redundancy on Cisco industrial switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-PRP-MIB?

CISCO-PRP-MIB is a Cisco vendor-specific module that manages Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP), an IEC 62439-3 standard used in industrial Ethernet networks for zero-recovery-time failover on Cisco industrial switches. It exposes configuration and status data for PRP channels, including channel identity, name, and the operational status of each of the two parallel LAN paths (LAN-A and LAN-B). Administrators use it to monitor hardware-level path health, specifically detecting when one of the redundant network paths has failed while the other continues carrying traffic, which is critical for verifying that hitless failover protection is actually intact. Because PRP is defined by IEC 62439-3, this MIB builds directly on that external standard rather than any other Cisco or IETF MIB. It is typically deployed in industrial automation, utility substation, or process-control networks where Cisco ruggedized switches provide dual-network redundancy for critical control traffic. Engineers can download the CISCO-PRP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PRP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco industrial Ethernet switches
  • PRP-enabled Cisco network devices

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll ciscoPrpChannelTable/ciscoPrpChannelEntry rows indexed by ciscoPrpChannelIndex to retrieve ciscoPrpChannelId and ciscoPrpChannelName, then check ciscoPrpChannelLanAStatus and ciscoPrpChannelLanBStatus for each channel. If ciscoPrpChannelLanAStatus reports down while ciscoPrpChannelLanBStatus is up, the network is running on a single path and has lost redundancy, even though ciscoPrpChannelStatus may still show the channel as operational. This lets an operator catch a silent LAN-A/LAN-B failure before a second fault causes an actual outage.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PRP channel status
  • LAN-A path status
  • LAN-B path status
  • channel identity/name
  • redundancy health
