Description: Monitors environmental conditions on Cisco devices including temperature, voltage, fan, and power supply status.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-ENVMON-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-ENVMON-MIB?

CISCO-ENVMON-MIB is a foundational Cisco hardware-health MIB that reports on the environmental monitor subsystem present on many Cisco routers and switches, covering voltage, temperature, fan, and power supply conditions. It exposes status tables for each monitored domain, such as ciscoEnvMonVoltageStatusTable and a parallel temperature status table, each carrying a description, current measured value, configured thresholds, and a state indicating normal, warning, critical, or shutdown conditions. This MIB is one of the most direct hardware health monitoring tools in Cisco's portfolio: ciscoEnvMonVoltageState and the temperature equivalent reveal whether a device is at risk of thermal or electrical failure, ciscoEnvMonVoltageLastShutdown records whether the device has previously shut down due to an out-of-range condition, and ciscoEnvMonPresent confirms whether environmental monitoring hardware exists at all on that chassis. It is a self-contained Cisco-specific MIB with no dependency on other standard MIBs, though it is commonly deployed alongside the newer CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB for finer-grained sensor data. It is used across essentially the entire range of Cisco routers, switches, and other chassis-based hardware with environmental sensors. This is one of the most frequently searched Cisco hardware-health MIBs, since ciscoEnvMonSupplyState and ciscoEnvMonTemperatureState are the standard objects NMS tools poll to alert on power-supply and temperature faults across the Cisco install base.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ENVMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers and switches with environmental monitoring hardware

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusTable and ciscoEnvMonVoltageStatusTable (via their respective Entry objects, keyed by index) to check ciscoEnvMonVoltageStatusValue against ciscoEnvMonVoltageThresholdLow/ciscoEnvMonVoltageThresholdHigh for each monitored point. A ciscoEnvMonVoltageState or temperature state reporting warning or critical, especially combined with a non-zero ciscoEnvMonVoltageLastShutdown, would indicate the chassis has experienced or is approaching a power or thermal fault requiring immediate hardware attention. Notifications configured under ciscoEnvMonMIBNotificationEnables would alert the NMS the moment any monitored value crosses its threshold.

What Can Be Monitored

  • chassis temperature
  • voltage levels and thresholds
  • fan status
  • power supply status
  • environmental shutdown history
  • environmental monitor presence

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusValue OID:

Select a Cisco routers and switches with environmental monitoring hardware as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusValue into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The current measurement of the testpoint being instrumented. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
