What Is CISCO-DOT11-CONTEXT-SERVICES-MIB?

CISCO-DOT11-CONTEXT-SERVICES-MIB manages the infrastructure side of Cisco's 802.11 Wireless Domain Services (WDS) and Wireless Network Services (WNS), which coordinate seamless client roaming context transfer across access points in a campus wireless deployment. It exposes objects describing the service type of a node, its parent node address, primary and secondary root node addresses, the currently active root node, and the WNS entity name for the campus-level coordinating device. Its monitoring value centers on the health and configuration status of this wireless services hierarchy: comparing cDot11csPrimaryRootNodeAddr/cDot11csSecondaryRootNodeAddr against cDot11csCurrentRootNodeAddr reveals whether the system is operating normally or has failed over to a backup root node, which is a key software/service-availability signal in large wireless deployments. It works together with the companion CISCO-DOT11-CONTEXT-SERVICES-CLIENT-MIB covering the mobile-node side, and both build on IEEE 802.11 concepts. An administrator would poll cDot11csCurrentRootNodeAddrType/cDot11csCurrentRootNodeAddr and compare it against the configured cDot11csPrimaryRootNodeAddr and cDot11csSecondaryRootNodeAddr to detect a failover from primary to secondary root node coordination. A mismatch, together with a changed cDot11csParentNodeIpAddress, would indicate the WNS/WDS hierarchy has reorganized, potentially due to a primary node outage. Monitoring cDot11csWnsEntityName and cDot11csServiceType across access points confirms each node's declared role in the WDS/WNS topology is still consistent with the intended design.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cDot11csStatusInRegistrations OID:

Select a Cisco 802.11 access points and wireless bridge (WDS/WNS) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cDot11csStatusInRegistrations into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of descendant infrastructure nodes registered with this entity since the last reboot of this device. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
