Description: Defines sysObjectID values assigned to Cisco hardware platforms, serving as the central registry for SNMP-based product identification.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-PRODUCTS-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-PRODUCTS-MIB?

CISCO-PRODUCTS-MIB is a foundational Cisco MIB that defines the object identifiers assigned to Cisco's various hardware platforms, which are returned as the sysObjectID value identifying a device's exact model/product family over SNMP. It does not itself expose runtime status data; instead it is a registry/naming module enumerating product OIDs such as gateway servers, terminal servers, routers, protocol translators, and specific platforms like the IGS and Cisco 3000 series. Its role in monitoring is indirect but important for software/hardware identification: a management system reads a device's sysObjectID and looks it up in this MIB to determine exactly which Cisco product it is talking to, which then determines what other MIBs and capabilities apply. It has no dependency on other data MIBs beyond the standard SNMPv2-SMI/SNMPv2-MIB sysObjectID mechanism it populates. It is used universally across any Cisco-managed network as the product-identification backbone for NMS auto-discovery. This is a heavily searched Cisco MIB, since cisco-products-mib is the registry NMS tools use to map a device's sysObjectID to its exact Cisco product model.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PRODUCTS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers, terminal servers, and legacy platforms (e.g., IGS, Cisco 3000 series)

Monitoring Examples

A network management system would read a device's sysObjectID and match it against entries like ciscoIGS or cisco3000 defined in this MIB to automatically identify the platform and select the correct set of vendor MIBs to poll. Seeing ciscoGatewayServer or ciscoTerminalServer as the resolved identity would tell an operator the device is a legacy access/terminal server rather than a modern router, informing which monitoring templates to apply. This module itself provides no runtime counters or status objects, only the identification registry, so no anomaly-detection scenario applies beyond misidentification during discovery.
