What Is CISCO-DOT11-ASSOCIATION-MIB?

CISCO-DOT11-ASSOCIATION-MIB is a Cisco vendor extension to the standard IEEE802dot11-MIB that provides detailed management information on 802.11 wireless client association, data forwarding, and per-client statistics on Cisco wireless access points and bridges. It exposes data on active wireless devices (clients, bridges, repeaters) associated to an AP, along with association statistics such as counts of associated and authenticated clients, and roaming events (roamed-in and roamed-away). Its monitoring focus is wireless connectivity/service status rather than hardware sensors: the active-device and association-statistics tables let an admin track how many clients are connected, detect abnormal roaming churn, or spot authentication failures, which is central to diagnosing Wi-Fi service problems. It explicitly extends the IEEE Std 802.11-1999 IEEE802dot11-MIB, making that standard MIB a direct dependency. It is typically deployed on Cisco Aironet-family access points and wireless bridges in enterprise WLAN deployments, and administrators can download the CISCO-DOT11-ASSOCIATION-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for client-association monitoring.

An admin would poll cDot11ActiveDevicesTable/cDot11ActiveDevicesEntry to read cDot11ActiveWirelessClients, cDot11ActiveBridges, and cDot11ActiveRepeaters for a real-time count of associated devices, then check cDot11AssociationStatsTable fields cDot11AssStatsAssociated, cDot11AssStatsAuthenticated, cDot11AssStatsRoamedIn, and cDot11AssStatsRoamedAway. A high and rising cDot11AssStatsRoamedAway count relative to cDot11AssStatsAssociated would reveal excessive client roaming/instability on that access point, suggesting RF interference or coverage overlap issues.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cDot11AssStatsAssociated OID:

Select a Cisco Aironet-family wireless access point or bridge as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cDot11AssStatsAssociated into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object counts the number of stations associated with this device on this interface since device re-started. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in client), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
