Category: Cisco Devices, VLAN and Bridging

Description: Extends standard bridge (STP/FDB) management with Cisco-specific bridging objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-BRIDGE-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-BRIDGE-EXT-MIB extends the standard IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 1493) with Cisco-specific enhancements for per-VLAN bridging behavior, covering things like per-VLAN forwarding database aging time and static address configuration across multiple VLANs. It exposes configuration-oriented data: per-VLAN aging timers, whether a VLAN inherits the global aging time, and static MAC-to-port forwarding entries scoped by VLAN. Its monitoring value is mainly around Layer 2 forwarding table health and configuration correctness rather than hardware faults, letting an administrator confirm that VLAN-specific aging and static entries match intended network design. As its name indicates, it explicitly extends the standard BRIDGE-MIB, reusing dot1d bridging concepts but adding a VLAN index dimension Cisco's platforms require for per-VLAN spanning-tree/bridging. It is used on Cisco Catalyst switches running multiple VLANs where per-VLAN bridge table behavior needs visibility beyond what RFC 1493 alone provides. Engineers can download the CISCO-BRIDGE-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-BRIDGE-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst switch (VLAN-capable Layer 2 switch)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cbeDot1dTpVlanTable, indexed by cbeDot1dTpVlanIndex, to check cbeDot1dTpVlanAgingTime and cbeDot1dTpVlanAgingFromGlobal, confirming whether a given VLAN uses a custom aging time or inherits cbeDot1dTpGlobalAgingTime. Separately, entries in cbeDot1dStaticTable (keyed by cbeDot1dVlanIndex and cbeDot1dStaticAddress) would be checked against cbeDot1dStaticReceivePort to verify a statically configured MAC address is pinned to the expected port. A mismatch here could explain unexpected MAC learning or flooding behavior on a specific VLAN.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-VLAN MAC address aging time
  • VLAN aging time inheritance from global setting
  • static MAC-to-port bindings per VLAN
  • VLAN forwarding table configuration
