Description: Manages IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) clock synchronization on Ciena CES switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CIENA-CES-PTP-MIB?
CIENA-CES-PTP-MIB is a Ciena CES (Carrier Ethernet Switching) platform MIB for managing Physical Termination Point (PTP) attributes — physical optical line-port parameters — as clarified by its own description, rather than IEEE 1588 timing despite the similar acronym. It exposes per-port physical-layer configuration and status such as slot/port index, interface description, modulation scheme, supported OPU (Optical channel Payload Unit) types, administrative wavelength, and admin/operational state. For status monitoring it centers on hardware operational state: cienaCesPtpAdminState versus cienaCesPtpOperState reveals whether a physical line port is administratively enabled but operationally down, while cienaCesPtpModulationScheme and cienaCesPtpSupportedOpuTypes reveal the port's optical transport configuration and capabilities. It layers on top of standard interface indexing (cienaCesPtpIfIndex) to tie its physical-termination attributes to the generic interface table. It is deployed in carrier/metro optical transport networks using Ciena CES equipment with coherent/DWDM line ports. Engineers can download the CIENA-CES-PTP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-CES-PTP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ciena CES (Carrier Ethernet Switching) optical/DWDM line-port equipment
Monitoring Examples
An operator polling cienaCesPtpTable/cienaCesPtpEntry by cienaCesPtpSlotIndex and cienaCesPtpPortIndex can compare cienaCesPtpAdminState to cienaCesPtpOperState to detect a line port that is enabled but not passing traffic, and can check cienaCesPtpAdminWavelength against cienaCesPtpModulationScheme to confirm the port is provisioned with the expected optical configuration. cienaCesPtpSupportedOpuTypes shows which OPU payload types the line-port hardware can carry, useful when validating whether a port supports a required service type before provisioning.
What Can Be Monitored
- physical line-port admin state
- physical line-port operational state
- modulation scheme
- supported OPU (Optical Payload Unit) types
- administrative wavelength
- port slot/port index mapping
